Zünd-Up was an architectural collective founded in Vienna in 1967. The name derives from the English verb ‘to burn up’ indicating the collective’s desire to ‘set fire’ to the university institution and the bourgeois society that they railed against.
Influenced by the student riots in Paris in 1968, Viennese Actionism and the films of Otto Muhl, Zünd-Up worked on projects which combined architecture, politics and the relationship between humans and technology.
This series of collages can be seen as a take on the Pop Art movement which emerged from the USA and the UK in the 1950s, and in particular as a response to Richard Hamilton’s Pop Art piece ‘Just what was it that made yesterday's homes so different, so appealing?’, where Hamilton merged humans with technology.
