With its abstract shapes in organically-dyed black, pink and mustard, JAMILA is a striking, decorative piece of natural woven art, designed to be hung either flat against a wall or as a floating mobile. We are delighted to be bringing these captivating works of African art to The Basket Room.
Designed by Nina Howard of FLOC and woven by groups of women in small cooperatives across remote regions of Uganda, these unique hangers are handwoven with local raffia, wound stitch by stitch around a small bundle of local sweetgrass. The JAMILA design features three fringed semi-circles hung from a central thread, with a black pom pom at the bottom of the stack.
Each section of this woven hanger moves freely, so you can either hang yours in open space like a traditional mobile and enjoy its mesmerising movement, or hang it flat against a wall – with or without accompanying wall hangings and baskets. A hand stitched loop enables easy hanging wherever you choose to display your JAMILA raffia hanger: they bring a soothing magic to bedrooms of children and adults alike, and are equally striking hung flat against a gallery wall in a sitting room, study or bedroom.
Made from sweetgrass and raffia.
