Handloom Silk Cushion, Pink

Regular price

Kadhwa, meaning embroidered is an exclusive technique of handloom weaving in the Varanasi region of India. It is an extremely intricate weave and could never ever be replicated on a power loom.

Each motif in the design is woven separately, leaving no loose threads at the back of the fabric.

Two weavers sit side by side, only weaving approximately 10-15cm of silk a day. As you can imagine this technique is highly labour intensive, requiring great skill and dexterity.

The number of skilled hand weavers in the area are decreasing and generations of weaving traditions, Kadhwa included are dying out. The Campbell Collection want to do their bit to preserve traditional craft techniques and feel incredibly honoured to be working with local Varanasi weavers who are seeking to keep these skills alive and thriving.
