The Performer

Regular price

£550.00

Original acrylic painting on canvas.

In her paintings and drawings Ruby often references classical antiquity; specifically the renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman artwork.

‘When looking at the paintings and sculptures of these eras I always feel like I’m looking into a deep lake, you’re never too sure what’s under the surface, but you know it’s deep, mysterious and very romantic.’

In her figurative work, Ruby loves to recreate the forms and dramatic themes of the Classical with a contemporary twist and feminist gaze. In ‘The Performer’ she is inspired by the quintessential harlequin stripes and outfits seen in Medieval paintings and the gothic style artwork found in tarot cards. Why is this female character dancing, and who is she dancing for?

About Ruby Bateman

Ruby Bateman is a visual artist, working and living in Hackney, London. Often her work investigates her personal and political identification with 'the mother' and (institutionalised) motherhood, which love and loss has led her to desire. Using a richly colourful and symbolic visual language, she references classicism, the spiritual, and her own fiction. Ruby is fascinated with the alchemic and transformative power of the artist, and how the creative process allows her to connect to a deeper maternal consciousness.
